Discovery of apsidal motion in α Coronae Borealis by means of ROSAT X-ray eclipse timing

چکیده
Four ROSAT X-ray observations of the secondary optical minimum of the eclipsing binary system α CrB taken in 1992, 1993 and 1997 are presented. Because of the totality of the X-ray eclipse, the times of mid eclipse can be accurately determined from the ROSAT data. The period between secondary minima Ps is found to be significantly different from the optically well determined period between primary minima Pp, thus indicating apsidal motion. The observed value Ps − Pp = 4.8 ± 2.1 seconds is, first, shown to be almost exclusively due to the primary component, and second, consistent with our current knowledge of α CrB A. The relativistic contribution to the observed value is 0.95 seconds or 17 % of the total effect.

XMM - Newton and the Pleiades – I : Bright coronal sources and the X - ray emission from intermediate - type stars
We present results of X-ray spectral and timing analyses of solar-like (spectral types F5–K8) and intermediate-type (B4–F4) Pleiads observed in a 40-ks XMM-Newton EPIC exposure, probing X-ray luminosities (L X) up to a factor 10 fainter than previous studies using the ROSAT PSPC. All 8 solar-like members have " quasi-steady " L X > ∼ 10 29 erg s −1 consistent with the known rotation–activity re...

We have identified five new R Coronae Borealis (RCB) stars in the Galactic bulge using the MACHO Project photometry database, raising the total number of known Galactic RCB stars to about 40. We have obtained spectra to confirm the identifications. The fact that four out of the five newly identified RCB stars are “cool” (Teff < 6000 K) rather than “warm” (Teff > 6000 K) suggests that the prepon...

Wepresent the analysis of the point source content of a low galactic latitude region selected from the ROSAT all-sky survey. The test field is centered at l = 90◦, b = 0◦ and has an area of 64.5 deg2.A total of 128 softX-ray sources are detected above a maximum likelihood of 8. Catalogue searches and optical follow-up observations show that in this direction of the galactic plane, 85% of the so...

We present an analysis of the X-ray light curves of the magnetic cataclysmic variable DP Leo using recently performed XMM−Newton EPIC and archival ROSAT PSPC observations. We determine the eclipse length at X-ray wavelengths to be 235 ± 5 s, slightly longer than at ultraviolet wavelengths, where it lasts 225 s. The implied inclination and mass ratio for an assumed 0.6 M ⊙ white dwarf are i = 79...

We report our complete database of X-ray eclipse timings of the low mass Xray binary EXO0748−676 observed by the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) satellite. As of this writing we have accumulated 443 full X-ray eclipses, 392 of which have been observed with the Proportional Counter Array on RXTE. These include both observations where an eclipse was specifically targeted and those eclipses fou...
